What affects the cost of a swimming pool on the Costa Blanca?

Two pools with the same dimensions can differ greatly in price. Site access, construction method, finishes and the space around the water all play a part.

What affects the cost of a swimming pool on the Costa Blanca?

A swimming pool is one of the most popular projects for homes on the Costa Blanca and around the Mar Menor. It is also one where quotations can vary widely. This is rarely about the water alone: the plot, the access and the space around the pool matter just as much. Here are the factors that shape the price, so you can compare proposals on equal terms.

Size and shape

Volume is the obvious starting point, but shape matters too. Simple rectangular pools are generally more efficient to build than curved or irregular designs. Steps, benches, infinity edges and integrated spas add complexity.

Construction method

Pools are typically built in reinforced concrete, often sprayed (gunite), or with prefabricated shells or panel systems. Concrete pools offer the most freedom in shape and finish. The right method depends on the design, the ground and access to the site.

Ground and excavation

What lies under the garden affects both cost and planning. Rock, a high water table or existing installations can add work. Excavated soil must be removed or reused on the plot.

Access for machinery

On many urbanisation plots, access is the decisive factor. If an excavator and concrete truck can reach the garden directly, the work is simpler. Narrow side passages, steps or neighbouring houses may require smaller machines or manual work.

Finishes and edges

The interior finish, such as glass mosaic, tiles or other coatings, influences both appearance and price. So do the coping stones around the edge and the terrace surface. You can see examples of mosaic and coping work in our pool references.

Equipment

Filtration, pumps, salt chlorination, heating, lighting, covers and automation all add to the investment, as well as to running and maintenance needs. Decide which equipment you want before comparing quotations.

The space around the pool

A pool rarely stands alone. Terraces, steps, fencing, showers, planting and outdoor lighting complete the space. Planning everything together, as in an outdoor living project, avoids rebuilding the terrace later.

Permits

Building a pool usually requires municipal permission, and communities may have their own guidelines. Read more in our guide to building permits in Spain.

How to compare quotations

  • Check that each proposal includes the same size, finish and equipment
  • Ask what is included around the pool: terrace, edging, electrical work
  • Ask how excavated soil is handled
  • Ask who is responsible for permits

Getting a realistic proposal

Send us photographs of the garden, approximate dimensions and a description of the access, and tell us how you imagine the finished space. We will discuss the options with you before preparing a written proposal. See our swimming pool service, or find pool projects in areas such as Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja and Ciudad Quesada.

Planning

Your questions.

Why do pool quotations vary so much?

Size, construction method, finishes, equipment, ground conditions, access for machinery and the work around the pool all affect the price.

Which is better, a concrete or a prefabricated pool?

Concrete pools offer the most freedom in shape and finish. The right method depends on the design, the ground and site access.

Do I need a permit to build a pool?

Building a pool usually requires municipal permission, and communities may have their own guidelines.
