Renovating an old swimming pool: leaks, finishes and equipment
Many Costa Blanca homes come with a pool that has seen better days. A renovation can make it look and work like new.

Older pools are common in villas on the Costa Blanca and around the Mar Menor. Over time, finishes wear, equipment ages and leaks can appear. Renovating an existing pool is often a good alternative to building a new one.
Signs a pool needs renovation
- Water loss beyond normal evaporation
- Cracks, loose tiles or damaged mosaic
- Worn or rough interior surfaces
- Damaged or loose coping stones
- Old pumps, filters and lighting
Find leaks first
If the pool loses water, the cause should be located before new finishes are applied. Leaks can be in the shell, around fittings or in the pipework.
New interior finishes
Glass mosaic, tiles and other coatings can transform an old pool. The existing surface must be prepared properly so the new finish bonds well.
Coping and the surrounding terrace
New coping stones and a renovated terrace change the whole space. See our references for a custom pool edge and pool and terrace work.
Equipment
Modern pumps, filters and salt chlorination systems can make the pool easier to run. A heat pump extends the swimming season, and LED lighting adds atmosphere in the evening. See our guide to outdoor lighting.
Changing shape or adding features
Steps, benches or a beach entry can sometimes be added during a renovation. Larger changes to the shape are closer to building a new pool.
Safety
Covers, fencing and alarms are worth considering, especially for families with children.

Your questions.
How do I know if my pool is leaking?
If the water level drops more than normal evaporation would explain, the pool may be leaking. The leak should be located before new finishes are applied.
Can an old pool get a new mosaic finish?
Yes. With proper preparation of the existing surface, glass mosaic or tiles can be applied to renew an old pool.
Is it worth renovating an old pool rather than building a new one?
Often yes. If the shell is sound, new finishes, coping and equipment can make an old pool look and work like new.
