Kitchen renovation in Spain: layout, materials and installations

A new kitchen is often the heart of a renovation. Layout and installations matter as much as the cabinets you choose.

Kitchen renovation in Spain: layout, materials and installations

In many Spanish holiday homes, the kitchen is small, closed and dated. A kitchen renovation can change how the whole home is used, especially when it opens to the living area or the terrace. Good planning starts with the layout, not the cabinet fronts.

How do you use the kitchen?

Think about who cooks, how many people the home hosts, and whether meals are mostly indoors or outside. A holiday home used by large families needs different storage and work space than a home for two.

Layout

Common layouts include a single wall, an L-shape, a U-shape and a kitchen with an island. An island needs enough space around it to work comfortably. If you want to open the kitchen to the living area, check first whether the wall is load-bearing; see our guide to removing a load-bearing wall.

Installations

Moving the sink, hob or appliances often means moving water, drainage and electrical lines. Induction hobs and modern appliances may need a higher electrical capacity. Plan these changes early.

Ventilation

A good extractor, ducted to the outside where possible, matters in an open kitchen. In apartments, the options depend on the building.

Worktops

Quartz, porcelain and sintered stone, natural stone and wood all have different characteristics in terms of heat resistance, scratches and maintenance. Large-format porcelain surfaces are popular for their durability.

Storage and light

Tall cabinets, deep drawers and a pantry make a kitchen practical. Combine general lighting with light under wall cabinets over the work surfaces.

Indoors and outdoors

In a Spanish home, the kitchen often connects to the terrace. Wide doors and a nearby outdoor kitchen can turn cooking into part of outdoor living.

Planning

Your questions.

Can I open my kitchen to the living room?

Often yes. If the wall between them is load-bearing, the opening requires a technical assessment, a calculated beam and the necessary permissions.

Which worktop is best for a Spanish holiday home?

Porcelain and sintered stone and quartz are popular for their durability and low maintenance; the right choice depends on use, look and budget.

Do I need new installations for a new kitchen?

If the sink, hob or appliances move, or if new appliances need more power, water, drainage and electrical lines usually need to be adapted.
